As the spectrum of interest in psychedelics broadens more every day, interdisciplinary connections become more important than ever. What is the Penn Psychedelics Collaborative?

In this episode, Joe interviews 4 members of the team: Co-Founder, Taylor Andrews Flatt, PMHNP; Associate Director, Victor Pablo Acero, Ph.D.; Professor in Fine Arts and Co-Director of the Weitzman School of Design, Jackie Tileston; and Executive Director and Director of the Penn Program for Mindfulness, Michael Baime, MD.

Recorded earlier this month at the PhilaDelic conference – one of the primary initiatives of the PPC – they discuss their paths to psychedelics and why this transdisciplinary collection of faculty, researchers, and clinicians at the University of Pennsylvania was so necessary. Viewing psychedelics from different perspectives (Flatt from nursing, Acero from bioengineering, Tileston from the art and mysticism side of things, and Baime from a more mindfulness point of view), their group is a case study in collaboration – a place where connections can be catalyzed and shared goals can be addressed from different angles. How far can we go when different groups start working together?

They discuss:

  • The concept of psychedelics not just being used to treat conditions, but to make us healthier
  • Psychedelic art and the idea of the art itself being psychoactive rather than just representations of trips
  • The work of David Glowacki and bringing about non-ordinary states of consciousness through VR
  • Research into salvia being used to alleviate stroke symptoms
  • How a lack of funding can really create focus

Taylor Andrews Flatt, PMHNP

Taylor Andrews Flatt, PMHNP, is the co-founder and director of community engagement for the Penn Psychedelics Collaborative at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as the lead organizer of the PhilaDelic conference. She received her Bachelor of Science in nursing at the University of Virginia and Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania in the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. She is a Ph.D. student at the Ohio State University, studying psychedelic-assisted therapy for children, adolescents, and caregivers, and the impact of psychedelics on family systems dynamics. In her free time, she loves painting, photography, and spending time in nature with her dog, Rosie.

Victor Pablo Acero, Ph.D.

Victor Pablo Acero, Ph.D.

Victor Pablo Acero, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral scholar and manager of operations and strategy at the Center for Psychedelic Drug Research and Education (CPDRE) at Ohio State University, where his research focuses on psychedelic therapies for recovery from traumatic brain injury. He co-founded and serves as associate director of the Penn Psychedelics Collaborative (PPC), a transdisciplinary consortium of faculty, researchers, and clinicians at UPenn. Victor also co-founded and serves as an organizer for the PhilaDelic Conference, the PPC’s flagship initiative. Victor co-founded the Intercollegiate Psychedelics Network, a non-profit empowering, developing, and connecting the next generation of students & rising professionals in the psychedelic ecosystem, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Source Research Foundation.

Jackie Tileston, MA 2

Jackie Tileston

Jackie Tileston is an artist whose paintings and drawings function as topographic energy maps of unknown realms and expressions of cosmic play. She lives and works in Philadelphia, where she teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, and is on the Faculty Advisory Board of the Penn Psychedelics Collaborative. Tileston will be teaching a new course at Penn in the Spring called “Psychedelic Paradigms and Practices.”
